Our main programmes abroad

Lungta's effort is to support Tibetans in Tibet, in exile and members of the Tibetan Buddhist community in Ladakh.

Helping to improve education in exile

More and more Tibetan children are getting modern education in schools and monasteries in Tibetan communities outside Tibet. However, there is a lack of funds to improve the teaching of modern subjects, to equip the schools with computers and books, etc. Therefore we started to support a monastery school in Diskit in Ladakh, India in 2002, and the school in Tiksey monastery in Ladakh in 2003.

The larger of the two monasteries, Tiksey, has about 100 monks, educating 40 students in its school. Diskit has some 60 monks and about 20 students. The schools have only very basic equipment. Therefore, to make the education more up-to-date, we donated a computer to each monastery and held computer skills and English language courses for the young monks. We are planning to go ahead with this project. In the next two years we are aiming to set up a school library in each monastery, complete with dictionaries, encyclopedias and English teaching materials.

Supporting blind children in Tibet

Official statistics of the Tibet Autonomous Region states that more than 10,000 blind people live in the area. Though, unofficial estimates are much higher. Project for the Blind, Tibet was founded by Sabriye Tenberken from Germany, blind herself, and Paul Kronenberg from the Netherlands in 1997. Together they established a school for blind children in Lhasa, which currently helps more than 20 children to get education and to learn how to live a normal life in spite of their handicap. Although the project is implemented inside Tibet under observation of the Chinese authorities, it highly benefits Tibetans. Therefore, we decided to provide a financial support to this project.

Helping former political prisoners

Passing on the testimonies of former Tibetan political prisoners in the Czech Republic is one our main tasks. However, in addition to publishing the testimonies at our website and in the Czech media, we also provide direct financial aid to former prisoners associated in The Gu-Chu-Sum Movement of Tibet. Finding accommodation, a job and medical treatment of the wounds suffered in prison are the main difficulties which the former political prisoners have to face after their release and seeking exile in India. The Gu-Chu-Sum Movement is based in Dharamsala and helps new refugees, Tibetan ex-political prisoners, to become a part of the society again.

How can you support these projects?

All of the funding for the projects abroad has come from direct public donations. In 2002 we started the Tibet appeal as direct support to the Gu-Chu-Sum Movement and Project for the Blind, Tibet. Let us know whether you want to support the Project for the Blind or the Gu-chu-sum Movement. All the funds from the charitable account are donated to the Gu-Chu-Sum Movement in Dharamsala and Project for the Blind in Lhasa and are always given these institutions personally by our members.

We will also be very grateful if you wish to support our projects in Tiksey and Diskit monasteries in Ladakh. If you are able to donate a computer, English study materials etc. or financial support, please be so kind and contact us.

We will be very grateful for any support!
